Group 1a: Rhododendron ponticum. Evergreen shrubs, often as high as wide, up to 3 or 4 meters. Flowers in rather tight trusses, rather small-flowered, in many different colours, profusely flowering. Leaves elliptical, dark green, more or less shining. Underside glabrous.
