Trage wat stijve struik met gekruld donker blad. Betekenis van de Japanse naam: 'legendarische leeuwenmanen' (no-theater masker). De naam verwijst naar deze leeuwenmanen omdat het blad van de Shishi-gashira wat gekroesd is.. De hoogte na 10 jaar is 150 cm. De bladkleur is diepgroen. Deze plant is zeer winterhard.
