Breedgroeiende struik vrij grote bladeren. Betekenis van de Japanse naam: 'duizendjarige berg'. Chitose-yama is een van die traditionele Japanse cultivars die worden geroemd om hun mooie herfstkleur, in het geval van Chitose-yama meestal felrood. De hoogte na 10 jaar is 300 cm. De bladkleur is bruin blad. Deze plant is zeer winterhard.
