Recommended literature : The nomenclature of ACER is based on the book 'Maples of the World' by D.M. van Gelderen,
Dr. H.J. Oterdoom en Dr. P.C. de Jong. This book is considered to be the major reference of the
genus Acer for the next decades. 458 pages, more than 200 colour pictures and hundreds of line
drawings make up this magnificent book.
'Maples of the World': price € 79.95.
Of several varieties we have larger sizes than mentioned in this catalogue available. Please
ask for details.
The Dutch Plant Collection of Acer is located on our nursery (the Aceretum) and includes over
700 species and cultivars and can be visited during business hours free of charge.
ACER PALMATUM CULTIVARS:
The collection of Acer palmatum has been enlarged significantly in the last years. New
contacts in Japan, Korea and the USA provided us with several dozen new cultivars. For the
time being these new varieties will not be available, we first have to grow some stock, which
takes a few years. We want them to be in the catalogue however, all marked with B/L, meaning
little stock available. You can see these plants in our nursery, but they are not always available for sale!
The spelling of the Japanese cultivar names have in several cases changed to bring them in
conformity with the latest views in this area. These names now mean something in Japanese.
For much more information see the new book 'Maples for Gardens, A Color Encyclopedia'
by D.M.van Gelderen and C.J.van Gelderen, which was published in the autumn of 1999 and unfortunately recently sold out.
Most varieties of Acer palmatum are grown in 3-litre containers, these are listed in this
catalogue with POT 3 litres. These are almost always 2-year old grafts, sometimes 1 year old.
The exact sizes of these plants
are not important for the calculation of the prices. Some more common varieties are also
available in larger sizes, these are mentioned. Sometimes of other varieties larger sizes are
also available, prices upon request or see the on-line plant shop where these are also shown with their respective prices.
The cultivars of Acer palmatums are divided into groups according to characteristics as
follows:
type 1a: upright growing shrubs with 5-7 lobed green leaves
